Family Home Evening: Pivotal Choices

This family home evening lesson is based loosely on “Life’s Lessons Learned” by Elder Joseph B Wirthlin. He gave the talk at the last General Conference. In the talk he shared stories of pivotal moments in his life, especially in his youth. This would be a great talk to adapt for a family home evening lesson, especially if you have teenagers. You can start out the lesson by reading Joshua 24:15. You can point out that we each must make the choice to keep the commandments and live the laws of the gospel. It is important to realize that we … Continue reading

Young Women: “Walk in the Light”

In his talk “Walk in the Light” President Henry B Eyring spoke to the young women. President Eyring began his talk by explaining that life is a journey. He outlines the basic principles of the plan of salvation, in order to point out our lives on earth are a chance to prove our faithfulness to Heavenly Father’s commandments. He points out that just by being on earth now, as a member of the church that each of the girls made righteous choices. President Eyring speaks about the blessings of making right choices. This allows you to have the Holy Ghost … Continue reading

Teaching Consequences

It is important to teach your children about agency. This involves allowing your children to make choices, and just as importantly allowing them to receive logical consequences for their actions. As parents it is our natural instinct to do everything we can to protect our children from the negative things in the world, but preventing them from having consequences can be a disservice to your children. It is best to start out teaching your children about choices and consequences when they are young. It is also important to teach your children that good children have positive consequences and bad choices … Continue reading

RS/EQ: The Law of Chastity

President Kimball was the prophet when I was born, and my earliest memories are of him at the pulpit in General Conference. I love his straight-forward style of teaching, and this lesson, #17 and entitled “The Law of Chastity,” is a perfect example of this. He tells us in plain language what God’s will us for us concerning chastity, and I will pass that plainness along today. The quote that heads this lesson reads: “The Lord has only one standard of morality—total chastity for both men and women before marriage and complete fidelity afterward.” President Kimball goes on to say … Continue reading

General Conference: “Message to My Grandsons”

In his talk “Message to My Grandsons” President Faust addresses all of the Priesthood brethren, as though they were members of his family. President Faust begins by emphasizing just how special the gift of the priesthood is. He shares the story of a young Priest, and the first time that he ordained someone to be a teacher. The young man’s testimony grew as a result of that experience. President Faust emphasizes that the priesthood is the authority to act in God’s name. He points out the importance of taking this seriously. He goes on to speak about the importance of … Continue reading
